So, Christopher Plummer is not only so gorgeous to look at (espech. as The Captain) and to listen to, but I'm also incredibly attracted to and in awe of his talent ...Infact, for me, talent is the biggest aphrodisiac, and I think Christopher's gift as an actor is what really made me fall in love with him. I genuinely can't imagine any other actor (inc. Yul Brynner who desperately wanted to play The Captain) playing the part in TSOM with such depth, weight and charisma. In the Blu-Ray commentary, Julie says he was the glue in the film, the grounding force that kept it together. And I completely agree. Anyway, I'm an actress here in Ireland, and as an actress, it is a joy to find actors such as Chris (and there aren't many) who are so effortless in their craft. I would say every moment he is on screen in TSOM is golden, but even in those moments there are more golden moments... his little quirks with his little fingers/hands, the way he stands, the tension he holds in his mouth... so I was thinking I'd start a thread here for those of us who love to micro-analyze (especially Christopher! hehe!) and explore moments in the film where we see 'uniquely Chris' mannerisms and characterizations shine through... I shall go first... and its not easy to decide where to start... you all can pick numerous moments in your posts, but I'll begin with one... I *love* the moment from the 'So Long, Farewell' scene at the ball where he waves his hand at Kurt and his high-pitched 'goodbye'. Kurt flashes a knowing smile at him, and the his reply starts with a hint of him being like "alright, alright, bed!" a la 'old Captain', but in spite of himself, he not only begins to smile but genuinely chuckles inwardly to himself as the moment settles. And I think it's also Christopher himself chuckling, not only Georg! Such a sweet moment with some rare father/son bonding... I think Kurt and the Captain share the same sense of humor. Also, the tails and white gloves... Cuckoo, Captain! Attachment Deleted

I agree with everything you said, and especially with what Julie said about him grounding the film. In other discussions I've mentioned that while her character is the focus, it is the changes she bring to the household, and especially to the Captain, that is the overarching theme----of redemptive love, faith, principles, etc.
I have many favorite moments but I think one of his best is when he comes out to the terrace after Maria has left and is hearing the children sing so sadly. His posture, the look in his eye, the way he exhales, it is just amazing how much he can convey with no words in just, what, 5 seconds?
Another is the little smirk he gets during the Laendler, when he is reaching back for Maria to take his hand from behind. So yummy.

since we're talking gestures, i'm not sure i can say that the door slammin' captain moment was a gesture. but the way he puts on the white gloves before cutting in on kurt is my next favorite. there is a bit of amusement at watching them try to dance together, but there is something else... like, inspiration mixed with yummy "i want her"-ness.

Of course slamming those doors counts!! And I love the glove moment!
I love the little eye flick back to Maria just after he says "You may call me... Captain!" I think a lot of his great moments are due to his eyes. (Don't forget his eyes moving up and down checking her out both after the puppet show and during the Laendler).

And when he makes her "turn", and "hat off". He is certainly inspecting her, though not with the same interest as after the puppet show.
His eyes are very expressive, and another great moment is when he runs to catch her after he fired her. The way he looks at her when he says, "I want you to stay...I ask you to stay"---- he looks so vulnerable and it is just delicious.

One gesture I think is pure genius (although it doesn't necessarily show him at his most yummy) is when he berates Max for proposing that his children should sing at the concert; his gesture, tapping Max on the cheek, saying "You're expensive...but very funny" is just so laced with sarcasm, irony, irritation, contempt and humour together with fondness and a myriad of other emotions that I marvel each time I see it. How can someone be so talented?!

Ah yessss, you mean this moment of absolute deliciousness right here... Attachment Deleted...You described it perfectly, defo some 'gimme a slice' goin' on under the simple 'amusement'... *Loving* the moments you all have picked, especially since I have missed some of them!!! utility_singer, I defo need to watch the Laendler scene for his reaching back to take her hand, I missed that smirk! And also I need to see him exhaling in the scene where Maria's left... and I need to watch for the 'you can call me... Captain' too, @charleybec!!! ...oohhh, any excuse to watch again!!! XD ...AND OMG I NEVER NOTICED HIM CHECKING HER OUT AFTER THE PUPPET SHOW!!! ...brb!

Attachment Deleted Word! #CPlums really did make a potentially boring, cardboard character incredibly engaging, visceral and 3-dimensional. *Love* the humour he gave the Captain, and the adorable playful voice he put on w/ "very funny"... If you like seeing him checking her out after the puppet show, don't miss the very last bit of that, as he closes the doors to the ballroom behind him, you can see the subtlest of flickers in his eyes as he just can't resist one more look at Maria who walks to the side of him into the hall. Mmmmmmmmmm... just so Plummeresque!

oh the glove moment is a masterpiece... thanks for finding that gif... love that moment.... And yes his eyes are SOOOOO expressive in every scene he is in.... one of my favorite "eye" moments is when he departs with Elsa and she said : "somewhere out there..... " etc. The look in his eyes are just yummy But my second favorite is the small wink he gives to Maria when she looks surprised, when Brigitha calls her mother for the first time... I melt every time.... (and that is the main reason for me to use it in my Buttons 2 story )

@utility_singer mentioned one of my favorites - when he comes out on the terrace while the children are singing - his acting speaks volumes. There are several smirks during the Laendler, and also I love the tender smile he gives her at the end when she breaks away. I think the gazebo performance is masterful too - he's a little nervous, and petulant, but then he gets back on top of it. Just the range of emotions he conveys in that one scene alone is remarkable. I always say this, but one of the MOST impressive things is how fine an acting job he did when we know what his attitude was toward the film. As he says in his bio, he really did care, in his own way. Oh, yes, another one I like to point out is the way he takes her hand when they are singing during the festival.

He spends a lot of the festival grabbing her hand (I haven't done a count but it is several times). Not sure whether it is more of a Georg/Maria moment or more Chris/Julie moment!

Since he has confessed to being several sheets to the wind while filming that, I vote Chris/Julie. Remember, during filming he was still singing back to his own tracks, and Bill Lee didn't dub them until afterward. I think he needed all the support she could give him. I also read somewhere---his book? an interview?---that while he recorded the tracks she was with him and 'held his hand' through the whole thing. Whether he meant literally or figuratively (or both), there was far more to that friendship than we'll ever know. The yummiest bit of him putting on the gloves? The way he bites his lower lip.

Another moment we don't talk about often: when he talks that gun out of Rolf's hand? Swooooon.

I always think that is a bit of Plummer coming through, because the rakish angle doesn't seem to me to fit the staid Captain von Trapp, but it does suit the drinking lothario we know and (?)love!

Thought of one: when he calls off the children's dinner, walks away nod throws a chuckle over his shoulder. Hee.

and let's not forget his face as he listens to his children sing for Elsa - and the hesitant sort of way he reaches out for them at the end of the song.

Has anyone mentioned how right at the start of the puppet show, Georg is sneaking a peak at what's going on behind the puppet show, then he puts his hand over his eyes and his finger on his lips pretending like he hasn't seen anything then does that kind of prancing tip-toe over to his seat! Swoon!!
Also love how he flings open the gates on Pegasus landing while he watches the row boat coming in (then of course the way he taps his fingers while he waits). Double swoon!!!
