Even the part where he momentarily relaxes and laughs at Elsa's joke about the yacht is great because it is do human to get distracted that way. That moment speaks so much to what is about to come. He laughs, but he's really thinking about what he's about to do and forming his words in his head already. It's almost like he's listening to her, but his mind is occupied with other things. He know's he needs to step in and stop her from going embarrassingly further. His interruption I think is a way for him to save her and himself from taking the rambling any further and she's rambling out of nervousness because she know's in the back of her head that he's probably going to call the whole thing off and that she's lost the battle.

well, yes, but I still like it for the brief glimpse into the connection the two of them had ... before. I mean we have the whole walk by the lake for that also. It is the end of a relationship that was important to each of them in some way. I do think it's interesting that it takes him a bit to gather his thoughts and cut her off - he tries once and fails - I love what you say about his wanting to help her avoid further embarassment.

It absolutely is real; he has said he relied on Julie a great deal to get him through that scene in particular. Also, as he has admitted to being a bit inebriated during filming at the riding school, and their admitted mutual crush at the time, I have no doubt that is real feeling behind that wonderful acting. And that's what makes the movie a masterpiece!

Oh and his behavior on the balcony? Even the part where he momentarily relaxes and laughs at Elsa's joke about the yacht is great because it is do human to get distracted that way. Hi nicky. Yes! He really feels bad for what he's doing to Elsa but he knows that it can't work. He has a great deal to thank Elsa for but it is indeed Maria who shows him how to love again. Hi @augiesannie

So its after Halloween and I am graciously eating some of the "leftover" chocolate from my kids candy haul and I'm watching the Sound of Music, like you do... And while I don't think this qualifies as a gesture per say, I did notice that during the entire apology scene after the fight by the lake our Captain never blinks. Not once. He is watching her from the minute he leaves the room till the moment he walks away. he never takes his eyes off her, not even to blink. Now that's dedication

I love that whole "never takes his eyes off her." Anywhere, anytime. It kills me. I never noticed this one before and now ... I can't take my eyes off of it! Thanks thebeestings!

He starts watching her from the moment they meet and continues doing so throughout the rest of the movie. When they are together he eyes rarely leave her. During the Edelweiss scene while he's getting his drink and the kids are surrounding Maria and telling her they want him to sing, he looks up at her even then and Max notices him checking her out.

Bags-I first!
Intrigued by his ring, because isn't he engaged to Elsa at this stage? Is it a new engagement ring? Or his old wedding ring? If so, why is he still wearing it?

We have had many discussions on that. It's, as far as we know, his original wedding ring that he has never taken off. He doesn't even remove it for Elsa. We assume he does so for Maria.

It's fascinating that he kept it on, it's even on when he embraces Maria in the gazebo, which as some of you have brilliantly pointed out, means he never took it off even when engaged to Elsa!

There's a whole lotta feels going on in that gaze. Oh boy, is there ever! I love Max's knowing look. Thankfully Elsa's back is turned lol. She can feel the electricity in the air and is hitting the cigarettes with a vengence!

This whole scene is foreshadowing. As he walks across the floor leaving Max and Elsa behind, the cameras focus in on Georg, Maria, and the children and leave Max and Elsa out of the cameras views as outsiders in this family.

This is less of a gesture and more an expression, but one of my favorites has always been CP's expression as he, Elsa and Max are driving along just after he tells them "It's nothing, just some local urchins." It never fails to make me laugh. I am curious to get everybody's opinion on a different gesture, though. When Maria returns, after Elsa had joined them and Maria is giving her congratulations, what do you all read in that little nod and half-smile he gives Maria? I've often fluctuated in what I see in that gesture and I'm curious to hear other thoughts.

I'm no expert, but I've always seen that as a gentle nudge to Maria to let him explain things, or to be patient, or.....something. In my head, as he takes those tentative steps toward her as the greet one another, his intention was to have the whole 'will you stay' conversation with her right then and there but then Elsa arrives and that's the end of THAT. I think that's why he is so quick to turn around and call after her as she dashes up the steps into the house, asking if she'll stay. He wants to know how much time he's got to straighten things out. I'd love to hear other thoughts on that.
As for that slightly freaked out realization that those local urchins are the ones he sired, well, it always makes me giggle. Brilliant.
