I just came back and it was pretty much the best thing I've ever done. Did you guys see the trivia questions they kept cycling through before the film began? Amateur hour, so easy, lol. But seeing it in a movie theater was about a billion times better than any other time I've watched it. There were a ton of people who came to see it. Some children and a lot of older people as well. The entire row in front of mine was a big group of ladies who had seen it originally in 1965, all talking about the Diane Sawyer interview and Carol Burnett and Robert Wise and this and that and the other thing. They were pretty much me. They kept their singing to a minimum (which I was grateful for), but they did all join in when the crowd sings Edelweiss at the festival, which I thought was cute. And we all applauded at the end, which I have never done in a theater before. My experience was very similar except I didn't hear anyone singing, most of the people were glued to the screen. There were quite a few kids and lot of older people. Yeah, those trivia questions were super easy and then they kept cycling through the same ones. They were mostly about the song lyrics and then one was about who played Maria in the original cast on Broadway which of course was Mary Martin. It was an absolute amazing experience. The screen was huge that they showed it on, probably the largest one in the theater and there were quite a few people there. The only way that I can describe it was that it was awesomely spectacular. The colors in the movie were amazingly vibrant and that opening scene was just brilliant. It was so much fun to watch it in a theater with other people and we were all laughing at certain scenes like when Maria first meets the Captain and the exchange between them and all the funny looks on his face when she challenges him. It was like sitting in a theater with a bunch of people that understood my obsession with this movie. So much fun. I have a friend going Wednesday and I'm so tempted to go again, but I think I have to many other things going on that day. Anyways for those of you going on Wednesday enjoy it. When we got up to leave everyone was talking about how good the movie was and just chatting away about it. The two older ladies, who were probably in their early 80's, sitting next me turned to me before leaving and said to me, "It was nice talking with you, we could tell that you were really enjoying yourself." So much fun and I'm so glad I went because there are some movies that were just meant to be seen in the theater and this is definitely one of them. Oh and yes everyone applauded right after Maria sang the opening number and then again at the intermission and again after Climb Every Mountain and again at the end. Lol which I have rarely ever witnessed anyone doing for any other movie.

I went to the 2pm showing and snagged a few photos. There lots of older folks there, a few kids, not too many there were around my age. No one sang but everyone was talking right up until the film started. Then we all clapped at the end of the film. Didn't expect that and like others of you I've never been to a film where anyone has done that. What is it about this film? Robert Osborne from TCM did an intro and outro for the film. (as I did read that on fantom) Comments on the Photos: Top Left: There's that trivia you were talking about SagaofJenny. Top Right: The beautiful poster! Sorry about the glare, couldn't help it with the plastic on top of the poster. Middle Left: I know kind of dorky but hey, it's really nice seeing SOM up there! Bottom Left: Sorry, I don't know my phone yet. First time my flash went off, must be on auto. Bottom Right: Look where they decided to feature SOM. Really!? Must be the prime location, huh?

Aw, I wish the theater I went to had a poster! My friend and I were hoping they would so we could get a photo with it.

I didn't see a poster in the theater I went to either, but honestly I didn't think to look for it. I was too excited about watching the film.

I thought I'd heard EVERY bit of trivia but in a People magazine feature, I came across this:
There was on-set romance The Baroness, a.k.a. Eleanor Parker, didn't end up with the captain, but she did find love in Salzburg. "Eleanor had great fun because she fell in love with the cameraman and they had a marvelous time together," remembers Plummer, 85. "He was an awfully nice guy and she deserved a nice guy. She was the most delicious woman, and, my god, what a beauty, so I loved them both and they were such lovebirds always holding hands everywhere. I think their story is much more romantic than The Sound of Music."

Saul Chaplin met Betty Levin while working on the set of The Sound Of Music and they later got married. Apparently a few romances going on behind scenes. I guess this kind of a movie just does that to ya, lol.

How wonderful! I hadn't heard either of those stories.
The city I live in always shows Sound of Music once a year at a huge theater. Its a lovely tradition that a lot of people make a part of their lives. I am so glad that the 50th Anniversary has been such a good reason for theaters to show the movie again!
The best big screen experience I ever had was going to the Sound of Music Sing Along they had in one of our huge parks. They set up the most massive screen you have ever seen, thousands of folks bring these elaborate picnic setups, everyone watches the movie outside and everyone sings along. They put the words along the bottom--and of course no one needs them! I went as a college student and singing along with a few thousand other folks to Do Re Mi pretty much cemented my love of this movie forever!

What!? what what!? I'm so jealous I would go every year! I have always wanted to go see SOM in the theater. With the 50th anniversary was my first chance to go see it around these parts. Did you dress up? I think I might if I ever had the chance to go to one.

One of these years I'm going to go to the Hollywood Bowl when they do the Sound of Music sing-a-long. I would love to live in a city where they showed on the big screen every year. I would totally be there as a regular, lol.

I know what I'll be doing all weekend. I just picked up my 5 disc 50th anniversary set. Can't wait to take it out and watch it all, already took the cd out to listen in my car. Super excited!

Speaking about the CD, I just played it on my cheapish CD player. I believe it's the same one that clarinetjamie is talking about (with 8 bonus tracks in different languages). Just wondering if the audio was re-mastered? I have an older CD...I have no idea when it was released but I got it in 2001.
It sounds like certain tracks from the 50th anniversary CD were re-mastered because they sound even more clear. I'm talking about "Prelude and the Sound of Music", "Maria", "My Favorite Things", "So Long, Farewell". I have yet to listen to it via headphones.
Does anyone else notice this or is it just me?

It sounds good to me, coming through loud and clear. I really don't understand the other songs in different languages. I would much rather have had the complete soundtrack with all the music including Edelweiss and the Laendler instead of songs in other languages that I can't understand and therefore never listen to. I might have to go out and buy a separate soundtrack. My husband was listening to My Favorite Things on it in Italian and he said that some of the items were actually changed a bit because they didn't all translate well into Italian, lol. He couldn't remember which ones exactly, but I'm going to have him listen to it again and tell me what they changed it to (he's a fluent Italian speaker).

Yeah, I took a good listen to all the tracks with my headphones and compared it to the old soundtrack. They all sound re-mastered...good! Though the balance was changed a bit in Edelweiss. You don't hear Julie's voice as much near the end of the song when she goes up the octave--bummer!
I would think that some of the lyrics would be different in other languages. I listened to Do Ré Mi in French and almost the entire lyrics were changed.
I'm going to put my French skills to use (yay!) and do a literal translation to show how much the lyrics have changed in French:
This is the only method And that's to start off on the right foot When we read we begin with A-B-C When we sing we begin with do-re-mi
Do-re-mi, the first notes my little friends Do-re-mi Do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si
Do, the back, it has a good back (dos in French=back in English) Re, the golden sun's ray Mi, it's half of a whole (demi in French=half in English...now that's a stretch!) Fa, it's easy to sing (facile = easy) Sol, the ground on which we walk on (sol=earth/ground) La, the place where you want to go to (là=there) Ti/Si, to whistle like a blackbird (siffler=to whistle) That will bring us back to do
Anyways, back on subject, I was hoping that the CD would contain all of the music from the movie (e.g. instrumental bits, uncut parts) but it didn't.

Hi! So this isn't really on-topic because I don't know where would be the best place to put this. It's about a live stage production of TSOM. Should there be a new section in the forum dedicated to stage versions of the show? Anyways, I haven't had the time to tell you this until now, but several weeks ago, I went to see a live stage production of The Sound of Music in Stratford, Ontario! That's in Canada by the way. The town is known for its world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival which produces a multitude of Shakespearean plays, modern plays, and musicals. People from all over the world come to this town for the festival, mainly from the U.S.A. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, the festival featured it. Which is why I included this here. My overall impression? Blown away by it! The whole theatre was exploding with talent. The actress who played Maria, Stephanie Rothenberg (who made her Stratford debut in this show), had all the youth and sparkle of Maria not only in her acting, but in her singing. Everyone in the company was fantastic. The children, yes, even the children were on point. The musical was performed on a thrust stage, so the audience was surrounding most of the stage, creating a more intimate atmosphere between the actors and the audience. I wasn't sitting that close to the stage yet I could see every detail of the actors' faces! In case you're wondering, this production, like other stage productions of TSOM that I've seen, follows the Broadway-movie hybrid. The song order is very much the same as the original Broadway production with the addition of I Have Confidence and the substitution of An Ordinary Couple with Something Good. I would say that this Broadway-movie hybrid is a happy medium. I know a lot of people don't like How Can Love Survive? and No Way to Stop It because it's not in the movie thus they don't feel a strong attachment to it, but I've grown to like those songs. The melodies are really catchy and so Rodgers and Hammerstein-esque. I feel that these two songs give more definition to Elsa and Max's roles. Also, when I was in Stratford, I saw Carousel the next day. It was phenomenal! What also left me in awe was that a lot of the actors who were in The Sound of Music the previous night also appeared in Carousel. The actress who played Sister Sophia in TSOM played the lead role in Carousel, Julie Jordan. And the actress who played The Baroness, played the supporting character, Carrie Pipperidge. Though the chorus wasn't that numerous, their voices blew the roof off! During intermission, I overheard a woman say to another woman that "this beats Broadway". Though I've never seen a musical on Broadway before, that's quite a statement! I haven't seen Carousel in a while and after watching this production, I am reminded of how haunting yet moving this musical is. Especially when they start singing You'll Never Walk Alone. If you ever get a chance, go watch a show in Stratford, wherever you are in the world! I also have some pictures to share. The Stratford Festival was the starting point for Christopher Plummer and many prominent actors like Colm Feore and William Shatner. Don't you think this is a great way to honour one of their veterans? Yup, it was nearby one of the theatres. Mosquitoes were biting me by the second while I was taking this! ^A life-sized poster outside one of their theatres! ^ The programs to the musicals. I also bought the R&H sheet music to all of their musicals! So happy that I found it in the town's bookstore. And now I included the next one as a joke. I found this in the theatre gift shop before I saw Carousel. I can take it down if anyone wishes. I put it as an attachment so it will appear smaller than the previous photos. If you're ever a fan of vampires and TSOM:

I actually think that "How Can Love Survive" and "No way to stop it work great in the stage version, just not in the the movie. It sounds like you had a wonderful time!

me too, I like those songs quite a bit! but they take the plot away from the romantic angle we love so much in the film. we're lucky to be able to enjoy both versions. Thanks so much for sharing this experience bluesatinsashes!

They could have fit How Can Love Survive in the movie, but No Way To Stop It wouldn't be relevant because it's about the Captain and Elsa's polarizing political views. And that was not the reason why they split up.
On another note, I finally got my hands on a copy of Forever Liesl in Stratford! The one and only copy in the store too. It's been out for quite a while but I couldn't find it anywhere. Currently reading it and loving all the detailed back story of the movie!!
