I thought we needed a dedicated spot to put news, photos, and links for the excitement of the coming year.

HAHAHAH the comments are hilarious!! Anyway, just thought I'd like to share my friend's facebook post. Evidently she shares all of our excitement with regards to the 50th Anniversary Edition She said: "more excited for the sound of music's 50th anniversary than sg50...oops"

I need to find somewhere around here that has it. There's apparently a Barnes and Noble here, but I looked up the address and have no clue where it is.

Went out yesterday and picked up Life's TSOM issue as well as this, which I found while having a brief moment of panic when I couldn't initially find the Life issue:

bit on the VF articleThe first quote used, from the article, says everything about their friendship: If each of them could go back and change one thing in The Sound of Music, what would it be? “I would have changed me altogether and gotten somebody else,” said Plummer, 85, prompting Andrews to chastise, “Oh, shut up.”

Thanks for the articles!
It's nice to see that the movie has gotten more and more favourable reviews from the critics as time goes on. It always baffles me how some cinefilles dislike TSOM, like they are expecting some kind of heavy-hitting WWII drama but instead getting a cheerful, rather wholesome film for all ages.

Thanks for the original review! I love reading stuff like that.
I think the reason it was criticized so heavily is because of the place Hollywood was in at the time. Movie musicals were on the way out to make room for darker and considerably less wholesome material. By the time the 70s came around films like The French Connection and The Godfather were winning Best Picture at the Oscars, not potential nuns frolicking in mountain meadows and yodeling about goats.
The general public has obviously disagreed for 50 years, however!

Critics and the public rarely agree. I remember hearing my favorite movie critic, Joel Siegel, once say that most critics review films based on their esoteric notions of what they think it should be, rather than how well the film does what it is supposed to do----does it entertain its intended audience.

That is true, a lot of times it's about expectations. Film criticism is all subjective anyway. And I agree, the general audiences have prove critics wrong over the years, and vice versa, where critical darlings never really find an audience outside of cinephilia.

Oh. My. GOSH. Did you guys watch the Academy Awards??? I knew they were about to do a TSOM tribute when I heard a snippet of Something Good when Scarlet Johansson came onstage, and I had expected them to do one. I was still a ball of emotions, and the video was really cute. Then Lady Gaga did an amazing medley (which I had also expected based on a comment of hers from the red carpet earlier). It blew me away. BUT! JULIE ANDREWS WALKED ONSTAGE AFTERWARD TO HUG HER AND THEN SHE PRESENTED AN AWARD. I legitimately cried. Had no clue she would be there. I don't have words for how awesome it was. I'm probably not even coherent right now. I don't see the tribute video or Julie's presentation on youtube yet, but here's Lady Gaga's medley, and Julie walks out at the very end. Hopefully someone puts her presentation up soon; she had a few words on the anniversary and I can't remember any of them.

It's been a while since I logged into the forum because, well, my life got a little busy... but I just needed to see if anyone else was as excited about the Oscars as I was! And I also didn't expect Julie to be there so I had to conceal my excitement, - you see I was watching it with my sister and I try to appear calm around family, you know, but I don't think she bought it. And to think I only decided to stay up so late because I heard Neil Patrick Harris was hosting it... Well, I'm just happy to know I wasn't the only one.

Yes I saw it thanks for the video!! My friends and I were stuck in school while it happened (because time difference and all that) and it was literally the most frustrating ever hahahaha. I thought Lady Gaga was pretty good and yes Julie hugged her and i was just like AWWWWW hahaha but at one point towards the end Lady Gaga reminded of me of Barbra Streisand (when she brushed her fringe aside haha)

I found the show online and spend 3 hours watching it... letting RL be RL... oh I LOVED the Julie andrews moment when she comes on stage... the admiration and amazement written in EVERY one of the spectators faces are WONDERFUL... she is truly a respected lady in Hollywood, that was so clear.... I would sure want to know what she says to Lady Gaga... and Julie is truly touched by the whole thing... wonderful.... one thing missing though.... CPLUMS.... really... missed him... it would had made that moment a 1000times more amazing

I watched the ceremony! Stayed up late for it but it was so boring, and the Swedish commentators (we have a the View type of panel here) really didn't help. But I was so happy to see that TSOM was honoured during the show. I loved Jules' appearance and just how respected she is! I thought Lady Gaga did a good job for the material she's given, but aside from Jules my favourite part was the TSOM clipshow bit, lol!

Speaking of which, does anyone have the tribute montage? I haven't seen it on youtube but I'd really like to have it, thought it was so cute.

Happy anniversary, everyone!!! My roommate and I commemorated it on our door: She did the lettering for me. Neither of us are artists but we just had to celebrate somehow. Pay no attention to our other decorations...

It always baffles me how some cinefilles dislike TSOM, like they are expecting some kind of heavy-hitting WWII drama but instead getting a cheerful, rather wholesome film for all ages. Like Pauline Kael's infamous review that (possibly) got her fired. And if William Wyler had stuck around that film would have been just that. I thought I would post this little article I just found: Why The Sound of Music is still genius at 50 by Noo Saro-Wiwa, it's a cute little article go check it out. I preordered the dvd/blu ray set from amazon. Though I don't expect much new from it than what was released on the limited 45th box set. Really besides the new documentary. A coworker and I are going go see the film when it comes out in theaters! Can't wait!
