yes, we've discussed it a thousand times. I was inspired by cass post of this picture on FB, and the ensuing discussion, and thought I'd come over here since we DO have some new members. (New members: don't be shy about digging into old posts to find juicy discussions - if you revive 'em, everyone else will join in!) One thing I like about this moment is that, while we've seen little flashes of G's soft and tender side, if I try to think about what it would be like to watch this embrace for the first time instead of, oh, like the thousandth? - I'd be struck by how tender and almost sentimental he is. "oh, my love." And yet you can also see the hotness seeping through.

He is so unsure and vulnerable in the whole scene in a way that he isn't in the rest of the movie. And the way he moves his lips across her cheek and forehead after the kiss. The feelings of love, relief and desire that emanates from him in that moment... *fan self*
But I think my thoughts the first time I saw it, I was maybe 7 or 8, were much like those of my 9 y/o son when he watched this scene with me for the first time a month ago. He said, "You can tell they are really in love because they make a heart when they stand there like that."

On both their behalfs. It feeds the feeling that they are truly destined to be together forever despite/because of the unlikelihood of the pairing.

OH! and you know, maybe the suit, which I celebrated in the costumes section, is part of it too. He looks more human (although devastatingly handsome) than in the uniform. More vulnerable. Just a thought.

frakkinghack, you'll soon work out it doesn't take much for the words "Georg" and "sexy" to be used in the same sentence around here... Then most of the ladies collapse in a heap as all previous conversations about the film are forgotten as they swoon and drool over what a hot guy he is!

@charleybec I was sort of starting to notice that trend. Poor man just wants to be loved.

The gazebo scene has to be one of the most romantic scenes of any move out there. I just love it for so many reasons. It does seem to me that he seems to be a lot more vulnerable during this scene. He's complete mush around her and he just seems all cute and nervous and very unsure of himself. It's a completely more endearing side to Georg Von Trapp. I think even Julie mentions it on one of her interviews about how adorable he was while saying those lines. I think this is just one example of Christopher's acting skills, how he goes from being in control and overbearing to a puddle of mud when he begins the process of trying to explain his feelings to Maria. He really does such a great job with this character despite the fact that he never liked the role and that's just one thing makes him so good at his craft.
I think we get a glimpse into this softer, more tenderly shy side of him during the Edelweiss song when he agrees to sing and then again when he gives that sheepish grin after he finishes.

totally totally. there are moments where he starts to become more captain-y - "Maria [he calls her by name!] there isn't going to be any Baroness." And "we've called off our engagement, you see." I only mention these because they are moments when he is trying to get back to sounding like normal, matter of fact, sophisticated G. As opposed to, "and it will be all wrong again when you leave." as soon as he says, "...in love with someone else. Can you?" he is back in control. At that point he's tender and sweet, but definitely leading the way. that understated "oh my love" is to die die die for.

I think by this point he's got enough information from her words and body language that he is convinced enough that she returns his feelings and that gives him the confidence he needs to go after her.

Yes---because she has given him that wonderfully hurt-filled yet snarky, "I'm sure the Baroness will make things fine for you." That's all he needs to know exactly where she stands.
This is such a delicious discussion that it makes me terribly happy I have central air conditioning in the new house. And yet, I still need a fan. Go figure.

I'm really enjoying this discussion - such great insights! Immediately before she delivers the hurt-filled yet snarky comment, she gives him a sideways glance as if to say "Chile, please!" I really feel for her at that moment, though. Her hopes were dashed when she first learned of his impending nuptials, and now after a brief glimmer of hope, they're dashed again. No wonder she walked away - she had to distance herself from the immense pain. But as you have said, utility_singer, it was then that the Captain knew where she stood. Thank goodness for her (and for all of us, lol) that he made things right.

Because there was that moment just before when she leans forward and says, "yes?" like her hopes are temporarily raised only to be dashed again. this discussion is reminding me that I should go back and pull out some older really good threads, like about Laendler and so on, for some of our new members to contribute to. Because there's always something new and wonderful to appreciate!

I love her moment of realisation when she gets just inside the gazebo, and he tells her he and Elsa have broken off their engagement.
Maria says "Oh, I'm sorry" and he says, with feeling, "You are?", and she says, "You did?" After that, she can't quite believe her ears, and Julie plays it just so well. Dreamy...

First off, welcome Sugarplum! Oh my yes, It doesn't matter how many times I watch this, my heart practically stops with the way they are looking at each other. I think to start with she is hurting so much so that she doesn't even realize what he's saying to her and then when she does, oh my the way her eyes follow him so intently and then the way he walks deliberately around her and then turns his head and slowly draws her in.............wow!! Ok, I need a bigger fan.

Yes, Julie plays it beautifully. I like to micro analyze her reaction after the kiss: His eyes open first. Her eyes are still closed, but then they open and she looks at him, wide-eyed and dreamy. Her lips part slightly for a second, then close, but she swallows, showing just how much the kiss has affected her. As he places his hand on her shoulder and gently kisses her forehead, she falls into his arms and... it's all over. *sigh* So romantic. Pass the fan. BTW, I think I read there's a thread tracking Georg's finger wiggles. Where is it? I'd love to read it. In case you haven't guessed, I'm fascinated by the gestures that actors use to convey emotions, esp. when I watch consummate actors like JA and CP.

I'll try to find the wriggles. But meanwhile I want to also praise the moment a little earlier when he says there isn't going to be a baroness and she listlessly says there isn't and he says Noo (yum) and she says she doesn't understand. She's hurting so much she's barely tracking what he's saying..

She's hurting so much she's barely tracking what he's saying.. Here's a thought I just had....bear with me.... There she sits, devastated, and he comes along to find her. At first she doesn't even want to see him---standing up and slightly backing away, then sitting very stiffly, like a rabbit ready to bolt. He draws her in, in his own obtuse, man-like way of beating around the bush several times without ever coming out and saying what he really wants to say and what she needs to hear. That poutiness nearly does her in, and he ruins the moment by simply asking her if she'll change her mind about leaving. She's clearly pissed off and gives him the business about the Baroness making things fine, and at this point not only is she hurt and mad but she is formulating a way out in which she won't be completely humiliated. I have nothing to go on about that except that as Anne says, she's barely tracking what he is telling her and simply reciting what manners would dictate. Then when he gives his surprised, "You are?" it hits her, "You did?" and boom, she's back in the moment and he's finally figured out he needs to freaking TELL HER already. I don't know if that makes any sense as I've not had any coffee yet.
