I'll try to find the wriggles. But meanwhile I want to also praise the moment a little earlier when he says there isn't going to be a baroness and she listlessly says there isn't and he says Noo (yum) and she says she doesn't understand. She's hurting so much she's barely tracking what he's saying.. Here's a thought I just had....bear with me.... There she sits, devastated, and he comes along to find her. At first she doesn't even want to see him---standing up and slightly backing away, then sitting very stiffly, like a rabbit ready to bolt. He draws her in, in his own obtuse, man-like way of beating around the bush several times without ever coming out and saying what he really wants to say and what she needs to hear. That poutiness nearly does her in, and he ruins the moment by simply asking her if she'll change her mind about leaving. She's clearly pissed off and gives him the business about the Baroness making things fine, and at this point not only is she hurt and mad but she is formulating a way out in which she won't be completely humiliated. I have nothing to go on about that except that as Anne says, she's barely tracking what he is telling her and simply reciting what manners would dictate. Then when he gives his surprised, "You are?" it hits her, "You did?" and boom, she's back in the moment and he's finally figured out he needs to freaking TELL HER already. I don't know if that makes any sense as I've not had any coffee yet. wow. if you're this good without coffee, sky's the limit. that's exactly what she's doing, you re right!!!

His eyes when she gets up, never leave her. He watches her body language carefully and observes everything she does and says. He knows he has to get close to her again so he gets up and follows her into the gazebo where he finally makes his move because he now knows through all of that what her real feelings for him are. He's suddenly full of confidence again and makes his final move to let her know his intentions without it being in question any longer. ..........and I haven't had coffee yet either, lol.

OMG. If R&H ever wanted to novelize TSOM, what you guys wrote above couldn't possibly be improved upon. Amazing.

Yes, Julie plays it beautifully. I like to micro analyze her reaction after the kiss: His eyes open first. Her eyes are still closed, but then they open and she looks at him, wide-eyed and dreamy. Her lips part slightly for a second, then close, but she swallows, showing just how much the kiss has affected her. As he places his hand on her shoulder and gently kisses her forehead, she falls into his arms and... it's all over. *sigh* So romantic. Pass the fan. BTW, I think I read there's a thread tracking Georg's finger wiggles. Where is it? I'd love to read it. In case you haven't guessed, I'm fascinated by the gestures that actors use to convey emotions, esp. when I watch consummate actors like JA and CP. Loved. This. Thanks charleybec and augiesannie for the kind words. I just hope I can contribute - there's so much good writing and so many insightful comments floating around here! I'm constantly learning from all of you. One other thing I wanted to add: The conversational shifts that develop are interesting to me. After the Laendler, whenever Maria and Georg conversed in the presence of others (eg. the children, the Baroness, the partygoers), they addressed one another as "Captain" and "Fraulein." But when they were alone together, like on the terrace or at the gazebo, the formalities disappeared and they spoke as two equals, reaching out, probing, trying to find their way to each other. And of course at the gazebo, the conversation shifted ever closer to intimacy when Georg called her "Maria" for the first time. It sorta reminds me of the book Shogun that I read many moons ago. IIRC, the very handsome Pilot-Major John Blackthorne and the very beautiful Lady Toda Buntaro spoke Japanese/English when others were around; but when they were alone they spoke Latin, which only the two of them understood. Theirs was an illicit love affair, so speaking Latin provided a measure of safety, but at the same time the language symbolized the purity of their love. I feel that with Maria and Georg.

One thing I want to mention about this scene that I noticed is that when Georg touches her cheek right before they kiss, this is the first time they really physically touch each other that we see in the movie. Of course they hold hands and touch during the Laendler, but Georg has gloves on. This moment here is the first time that we see their skin touch.

He touches her to guide her into their first kiss all the while looking into her eyes to make sure she is ok with it. Swoon!

And once he starts touching her, he doesn't stop through the whole scene. I LOVE how gentle he touches her at first, well the whole time they are in the gazebo really, but especially at first. When he guides her into their kiss, then brushes his lips on her forehead, then touches the back of her neck as she leans in to hug him. Oh help.
It's actually hard for me to watch this scene with other people in the room because I usually make too much noise with my muffled shrieks on the first attempt and then have to rewind and try again. This repeats several times. Eventually, I can watch it like a normal person. There are several parts of this movie that if I'm not alone I have to prep myself, otherwise I'm embarrassing. This scene is definitely one of them!

I think it is the way he is looking at her to make sure she is happy with what he is doing, which I find most touching; he is allowing her to back out at any stage if she feels uncomfortable.
A lovely touch for the Captain, but even more genius of Christopher Plummer to think of playing it like that.

Yes yes yes to all the above. One of my favourite parts is actually AFTER he’s brushed her lips with his - he pulls back to look into her eyes, almost to try and gage her reaction. But she’s still holding back and gives nothing away (she’s too stunned and too fragile to truly allow herself to be vulnerable yet.)
It’s then that he tries to reassure her further by brushing his lips lovingly across her forehead and temple, and only then does she finally allow herself to succumb to it, to let go, falling into his arms in relief. In that moment he clings to her with equal relief, because he knows he finally has her. The moment is just so poignant and beautiful

The moment is just so poignant and beautiful I am so glad that you mentioned the look Maria has after the first kiss. I think most people (myself included) are so swept away with the kiss that we often don't notice it. But she definitely has a wide eyed look that, in my opinion, is her silently asking Georg if he's sure about this. He then leans in to kiss her forehead and she knows he's sure about it. This then allows her to show that she's sure about it too. Attachments:

You see her accept it and become totally sure that this is what he wants, and If the lighting was better you’d be able to see how huge her smile is as she rests her face upon his chest before her “Rev Mother” comment. He’s so respectful and not forceful. The most forceful thing he does is say “I Love you” which I’d like to see as him showing how very certain and serious he is. Letting her know that this is it. No question at all. He Loves her. Little tidbit...you can hear their lips hit at the last kiss. It’s adorable

I understand why some think it is too forceful, because it is much stronger than anything else he has said in this scene, but that's kind of why I like it. It is very confident and very direct. I'll have to listen for the kiss on my next watch!

Another thing I like about this scene (there are so many!) is how Georg seems happier from the moment we see him. He is so serious when watching Maria from the balcony in the scene before, and now that he's gotten himself out of the Elsa mess he created, it's like the weight of the world is off his shoulders. "Hello" "I thought i just might find you here." "No, no, no, no, sit down please." It all seems kind of playful how he says it. Or maybe he's just nervous and that is how he handles it.
Maria, on the other hand, looks like a mixture of confused, sad, and wishing she was done facing this problem. At least for now..

What's your take on this line? She can't even look at him when saying it. Is she thinking how dare you ask me to stay when my heart is breaking?

Ok, I'm done obsessing over the gazebo after this post. For today anyway. I usually don't drink caffeine, but I had a coffee this morning and it's making me want to post anything and everything that I think and feel..
Georg is so affectionate! The person he presents to the outside world is so formal and proper, but when he's alone with Maria in the gazebo, he has no problem saying lovey dovey things and showing gentle affection. Swoon! His hands holding her face as he kisses her and tells her he loves her. Then once she's in his arms, he can't even stop kissing her while he asks who to go to for permission to marry her. No wonder there is so much fanfiction about these two!

It’s a quip, how dare you ask me to say when I can never have you. And “what do you need me for? You have baroness sparkles there to make you happy” But his tenderness there. It does show us who he is. Who he REALLY is. Not who he’s expected to be, not who he wants the world to see, but the true Georg. The man. Whew *fans self* and him in that tie. The man has several outfit changes a day. And did I mention how hairy his hands look and how the light shines off the pinky rings??? *drinks cold water*

I like how you point out that it stops her in her tracks. She's so hurt. She literally has her back to him and is walking away. Then he says the frauline-less Maria and she stops. Do you think a little part of her is wondering why he is torturing her? She's out there to be alone with her thoughts, and in he comes asking questions that she is too embarrassed to truthfully answer, wants her to stay (she thinks with Elsa there too), then calls her Maria (suggesting that they are friends? equals? what does she think this means at this point?). She has to be thinking - my heart is broken enough, why are you making this harder on me, go back to your fiancee. Of course, he soon tells her what's going on, but those few seconds after he has said her name are fun to analyse.

But with Maria, he is able to be vulnerable and so is she. It's lovely.

She clearly noticed that he called her by her first name, but I don't think she knows what this means yet, and she seems like she is lost in her own thoughts all the while they are talking about there not being any baroness. Even her being sorry about the broken engagement seems like she said it on autopilot while focused on her own heartbreak. I don't think she starts to have hope until she says "You did??". Like, wait a second, you want me to stay and Elsa is leaving??

It’s almost goofy and adorable I think he's actually smiling at her, not faking one. I think it's a combination of being happy/relieved that the Elsa problem that has been weighing on him for weeks is finally resolved, and being nervous about what Maria will say once he tells her he loves her. Do you think he has ever been nervous talking to a woman before? I mean, look at him, he's probably never had to go after a woman in his life. They were probably always chasing him.
