I also love how, when she strides away from him and makes the remark about the Baroness being fine, with a bit of venom in her voice, he follows after her and tries to straighten her out - he looks so handsome at that moment, and there's a beautiful bit of cello in the background.
"You what?"
"You did?"

Or rather (after he says they have called off their engagement), their conversation goes:
"Oh, I'm sorry." "You are?"
"You DID?"
Such a fabulous bit of screenwriting, because their whole relationship and the direction of the film takes a sea-change in 7 little words. Masterful.
Do you think this was one of CP's famous contributions to the script?

Have you ever noticed that some of the gazebo screencaps look lovely on their side too? I shouldn't be on this forum with a glass of wine in my hand..it makes my thoughts go downhill too quickly.. Attachments:

When Georg gets up and walks toward the gazebo and kind of glances back at Maria to let her know to follow, doesn't it kind of remind you of the Laendler when she comes up behind him? I think maybe the Laendler music is even playing at this moment? I'll have to check. This walk just stuck me as kind of a dance the last time I watched it. They are always kind of dancing..

I suppose it is because they say that when you really like someone, your body language reflects theirs. Perhaps this 'mirroring' seems like a sort of dance (also seen after the puppet show).
I agree with Augiesannie that, in his walk towards the gazebo, he does look impossibly handsome. It's something to do with the suit and tie!

There is really a big pause between "May I?" and "You know I was thinking.." and I was trying to put myself in Maria's shoes for this moment. He shows up unexpectedly, answers no to her question about if there was something he wanted, asks to sit down, sits down, and then says nothing. It's would be kind of funny if she wasn't heartbroken. Part of her has to be wanting to say "WHAT DO YOU WANT??" He is nervous and doesn't know what to say, but from her perspective, this silently sitting together has to be torture. She looks like she might cry.

She is standing a little bit sideways for the first kiss. I really like how he brings his hand from where it was touching her chin down to her shoulder, kind of encouraging her to turn completely towards him, which she does. It is then easy for her to wrap her arms around him when she wants to, which happens right away. The relief in that moment when she falls into him and lays her head on his shoulder is palpable.

jennifer1983, I think right before she says, "the Reverend Mother always says..." Yes! She gives out a sigh of relief. I’d you turn up the lighting on your device you can see she is also smiling and her thumb is stroking his back. A comforting, comfortable motion. I believe she also is stroking at his hair at the back of his neck when hugging him after the final kiss. It’s adorable. They’re finally comfortable with one another. I might cry

It must be strange to act with someone in such an intimate manner like this...especially when (ahem) you DO actually rather like them...but you're both married...

Dissolving marriages and poor timing. Ah what may have been. Emma was on set most of the time. One of my favorite pictures is of her daughter walking by the cast and CPlums has a look on his face that’s hysterical. Parker and Hayden are apparently doing some baby talk, CPlums is perplexed and studying her as if she were some kind of experiment. Though it’s fun to wonder. I do believe he “shot his shot” as the young kids say.

Do you think G&M have spent time alone together on a regular basis (not like that!) before this scene? They are alone in the dark, sitting really close to one another, walking shoulder to shoulder into the gazebo, talking about personal things - they just seem very comfortable with each other. And maybe that is because they both feel that they have nothing to lose. Or are they always comfortable together and they are still able to do that even though they are both unsure of the other's position?

I think they must have done. In my mind there must have been at least one time when Max and Elsa were busy somewhere else - sightseeing or something- and the kids delayed or preoccupied, when G and M were the only ones who turned up at lunch, say. I suppose it depends on whether you think Maria and the kids dined with the other adults or in a separate room, but it would be fascinating to know how that conversation might have gone!

yes, plus one imagines that they had to confer over the children's studies and overall well being. Now how much of that conferring was really necessary I don't know ...

In my fantasy world, they meet together often, to discuss the children of course, but since the children are flourishing under Maria's care, the topic of conversation can quickly stray away from the children, and this would give them the opportunity to get to know one another on a more personal level.

After he kisses her, it almost looks like he is going in for another kiss, but then thinks better of it and brushes his lips against her forehead instead. What a good move! I think another kiss might have scared her at this point. She needed a little time to sort out what what happening before kissing him again. The next one (after Something Good) she is initiator, or at least an equal initiator in. I love it.

I love that second kiss too, except I'm just thinking they really are going 'whole hog' (and enjoying it),when he says 'Maria, who should I ask if I want to marry you?', and I can only think he is talking out of the side of his mouth -ha ha! 🤣

She’s thrilled and sooo dreamy. It struck me that from the moment he clasps her chin (which I learned was actually romantic proper etiquette back in the day) they never separate from one another again during the whole scene. They are connected, touching until the scene changes to her in her veil at the wedding. They remain one. Swoooooon. <3

At first her look is of shock, then almost anger or determination (you rascal, look what you put me through! You knew we were in love!) to absolute relief when she leans in and feels his lips and immediately melts into his arms. If you lighten the scene you can see her huge smile. She’s stroking his back with her thumbs and gives him such a squeeze after she makes her Rev Mother quote. Just adorable.

I've been reading this thread for almost 1 hour and to each post I say to myself: "I'm going to quote this! how right you are! it's exactly what I feel!" Then I move on to the next post and again I think it is sublime. In the end, I have decided not to quote anything and simply say that this analysis is magnificent. All of this thread (including the downhill talking about CP's chest hair) is the best onboarding for a newcomer to this forum. Amen to everything!

I was just watching a video that Indigo posted over in the background section. Here's the link to the thread if you want to watch it: sound-of-music-fics.freeforums.net/thread/1649/new-screen-tests-videoAnd the reason I brought it up over here is, during the some of the screen tests that they showed, the dialogue for the gazebo scene was as follows: G: It's no use marrying one person when you are in love with another. M: And Baroness Schraeder is in love with someone else? G: No In the movie, of course, Maria understands right away when Georg says "You can't marry someone when you are in love with someone else. Can you?" that this means that he is in love with her. Apparantly at some point they had Maria still not understanding and needing to ask more questions at that point. Or maybe she did know, but needed to hear him directly say it? What do you think about this dialogue? I prefer the movie version, but still, Maria thinking that Elsa could be the one who had a love interest on the side is an interesting thought to ponder.

I think it is better in the film because it shows they understand each other and can be more direct with each other (which is usually the way when people are in love).
