Yeah, doubt she imagined anyone as sunny and fresh-faced as Julie Andrews was going to be hanging around, especially if she knew the governess had come from the convent! When I think of nuns, I think of my adorable but very elderly second grade teacher.

Not to mention the sparks that fly between her and the captain whenever they are in the room together. Hot.

you know, it's all good, but in my headcanon, it isn't quite ... sparks. She admires him (because she is seeing his softer side, and maybe because he actually tried to unbend and love his children) and obviously who wouldn't have a crush on him? And I think he is seeking her approval by now, and yes he might have noticed that she's lovely and needless to say he admires her. I don't know that they are both thinking mnmnmnmmmnm. I would say that they are beginning to fall in love with each other but that both of them would run screaming in the other direction at the suggestion. However, I love visiting others' headcanons as well.

Run screaming in the opposite direction? I wouldn't think that, but certainly vehement denials on both their parts.
Oh, I don't know that they realize they have "it". Elsa sure notices, though.

Very interesting point about Elsa. I once wrote about G trying to keep his Maria crush from Elsa. But maybe Elsa is the one to point it out to G and he denies it. Nice.

Vehement denial AND running, actually. Just not screaming.
I think Elsa certainly felt a change in The Force. Wait, wrong movie. But she was more annoyed that she was competing for G's attention. I don't think she really understood that she was the third wheel until the night of the party.
Don't you hate when you decide to respond on your mobile device so you don't have the actual thread to look at and know if you kept on topic? No? Just me?

I keep watching this over and over and I think I have to agree with utility_singer. I'm not so sure he's completely looking at Elsa, at least not initially. To start with I think his attention is turned back to Maria and then he brings it to Elsa when she smiles at him and he returns her smile, but to me it doesn't even look like he's turned in the direction of Elsa. End of song and head still turned in the same direction. I don't know maybe I'm totally wrong, but it seems like he's turned in the same direction in all of the pictures towards Maria. The one below is the very end of the song when he we know for sure he is looking at her.

Allow me to support clarinetjamie 's arguement with an over the top pic spam. I apologize in advance to mobile users for abusing your data usage. If I may Establishing shot: Clearly he could look at the baroness by looking almost straight ahead while squaring his body to the guitar and keeping his eyes level to the floor, as she is seated just as he is. But no. When his face lights up and a small grin breaks out he is looking to his left and slightly up where we find... Maria. Who immediately notices and returns his warm regard. But Max also notices and is thinking, "If you are thinking what I think you are thinking you had better hope Elsa doesn't know what you are thinking, my besotted friend." And sure enough two frames later Max sees Elsa turning and noticing that George is noticing... Maria, who is noticing the beauty of the man singing directly to her a father having a lovely moment with his children. And Max notices that she notices and wonders if Georg realizes she notices But Georg is noticing how hard it is not to smile when Maria is looking at him like this... And so she watches him while he finishes the song And he does, making him look at her like this...and neither of them notices that the other adults in the room notice this and are thinking this. Elsa: She was certainly right. She won't make a very good nun. Georg will see to that personally. Max: You are in a great deal of trouble my friend.

Frackinghack, you're a genious. Brilliant pictorial analysis! Love it!
So does Georg notice her dreamlike state when she is leaning against the wall? Hmmmm, I wonder and if so what in the world is he thinking?

Love it. Great analysis frakkinghack. I also believe that last screencap (of Elsa and Max - and the comment on it) is worthy of a caption contest entry.

......and Max is the first one to speak after he finishes the song almost as if he's trying to speak up to break the spell between Georg and Maria. He noticed everything about their little smiles and eye contact. It's sort of an awkward moment and it's like Max knows it is and to make it less uncomfortable for Elsa he starts talking.

I've always thought that Max request that Georg join the Von Trapp Family singers was much less self serving than it seems. He is rescuing everybody from the extreme tidal wave of awkward that was about to swamp the room.

Hmmmm, I wonder and if so what in the world is he thinking? The Captain notices everybody and everything! I wonder if he notices that everyone seems to enter a dreamlike state when he starts singing? After the rowboat scene, when the Captain walks into the room singing along with the children, Max leans his head back against the wall to listen. Then, during Edelweiss, Maria leans her head back. And toward the end of the song, little Gretl places her head on Brigitta's shoulder. Let's face it, the Captain's singing knocks the socks off everybody within 50 feet! Well, everyone except the Baroness, perhaps? She's the only one who doesn't really respond that way. When she smiled at the Captain during Edelweiss, it seemed more "I've finally gotten his attention" rather than her appreciation of the music itself.

She comes off a very aloof, which might just be her aristocratic upbringing. But I do think that natural tendency is heightened by his obvious comfort with his children and eventually Maria. Where as he drops his aristocratic facade while in the bosom of his family, she clearly cannot. I think if sh could, she would have, especially once it becomes clear that Georg is enjoying the more relaxed atmosphere that Maria, through the children, has created in the villa. She continues to cling to the persona and the man she wants him to be. Even to the end, when she interrupts his break up speech and turns the table on him to save face. We had a conversation about her at work today (do I get bonus points for secretly fangirling at work ) and I said that as a kid I always saw Elsa a the evil step mother type, but watching it now as an adult I am struck by how much she is obviously aware of what is going on and in the end I eel a little bad for her and have a lot of respect for the fact that she bowed out gracefully.

I think Elsa is also very nervous looking after she sees how Georg is affected my Maria and all of the sudden she gets a small piece of his attention and it's almost like a relief smile, but I'm still not completely convinced that he's looking at her.

frakkinghack I'm sorry I was away for this. you are AWESOMESAUCE. I mean, I always thought he was mostly looking at Maria and not Elsa, but you have taken that simple insight and turned it into a PhD dissertation. So many good insights here. Also sugarplumms I so agree about the particular intent of Elsa's smile. It's all about her.

Yeah. good time. Maybe I'll start the caption thread back up? Any thoughts?

Frackinghack, those are excellent points about her upbringing and her concern about Georg's comfort with Maria and the children. You've helped me see things from her perspective a bit more; this is a very difficult situation is for her. And when she does bow out gracefully, she looks really beautiful. I love how soft she looks and the way her jewelry sparkles as she speaks. The funny thing is, the first time I viewed the film, I thought she was evil, too. When she joked about bringing her harmonica, I was like "What the - ?!" Frankly, I was ready to snatch some hair. But now that I've seen the movie many, many times, I just chuckle :-) BTW, the first time I heard her harmonica joke, I immediately thought about the classic Carol Burnett skit "Caged Dames." www.youtube.com/watch?v=872mSLg1yVI Start at 2:10 to see what I mean.
