Attachment DeletedIn case no one can tell I really love finding these .gif files (they are very cool though), I thought this one was awesome. I was surprised that I couldn't find a thread on Edelweiss (although I may have missed it). I think we need to talk about this scene and all its awesomeness (but I can't right now... I have to go and watch Sherlock with my husband that we recorded the other night - yes lemacd, I'm excited!!!)

Well, it's just so wonderful. I think at one point we did discuss the moments before he starts to sing -- the way the children are all begging him to sing, but it is Maria who says the last "please" and he relents and says "all right." Somewhere I posted a screencap of when she hands him the guitar but I can't find it right now. Mmmmm.
Anyway, the way he tunes up the guitar and begins to sing, hesitantly - it's a big moment, emotionally. That melty little exchange of looks with Maria in the gif -- the mocking "happy to meet me" and her gauzy look back at him - I wouldn't quite call it steamy, maybe adoring? He does also give Elsa a look, later, I think, but it's less about "us" and more about "my homeland." And of course, Maria scores that adorable little shrug at the end in the gif. Maria 2, Elsa 1. (There's also the whole angle of Max noticing Elsa noticing M&G).
There's more but I have a train to catch! Others?

That's right... There is the whole thread on "please?" I had forgotten!! Oh well all good!! And if course, the look thing that Max does, the G to M to E to G to M thing... Too much awesomeness for right now (I'm about to fall asleep, I'm so tired).
Hope your work trip goes ok augiesannie

He definitely agrees to sing for Maria. He looks in her eyes and relents. Completely hot while at the same time totally innocent.
I actually don't know that he looks at Elsa, though he does look in that direction. I think he's looking at the children seated in front of her, but it appears he looks at her because the cut to her closeup. But I am prepared to be proven incorrect on that. The E noticing G noticing M who is completely enraptured by G, and Max noticing the whole thing is Brilliant Directing.
It is lovely the way this is used to show the first 'bloom' of M & G's feelings for one another.
That little shrug and embarrassed grin G gives M at the end? {sigh} I'd have run over there and kissed him right then.

oh, thank you thank you for starting this topic. i was actually going to post an observation about this scene but decided to wait until morning to do it and you beat me to it, but... that is just perfect. i was watching a video and there was the bit where elsa looks over at maria and maria leans back against the wall and she kinda rolls her head to the side, very dreamy. so i went in search of the screencap: Attachment Deleted (if you click, it will be larger... like full screen larger lol) and i wondered what she is thinking. i mean, there is the face value "wow, i didn't know he could sing and this is such a beautiful song." or "this is such a beautiful moment between father and his children. i'm so happy things are working out on that front." but i like to think she is indulging herself a little bit. she is thinking, i'm standing over here out of the way, it would hurt no one if i admire how handsome he is, if i let his voice carry me somewhere only we know, if i let myself want everything before me for myself. it would hurt no one if i actually believe he is thinking about me the way i'm thinking about him. considering what has been said about the cut scene that follow this one, i don't think it is off. i just occurred to me that he sang because she asked, and yet she said nothing to him after. she smiles at him when he does that adorable shrug, but all she says is "time for bed, children." isn't that kinda juicy fanfic material? was it really bedtime? or was she eager to be alone to continue these thoughts? hmmm... about what has been said above: i think he does look at elsa. she smiles at him in return. it's who he ends the song looking at that says it all.

Mmmm---she doesn't say anything, because Max tells him he could be in his new act, and then Elsa begins talking about throwing her a grand party. Then Maria hustles the children off to bed. Almost as if she doesn't want to think about Elsa still being there. I mean, she's probably thinking, "take me, I'm yours" but wouldn't say it out loud.
And I agree, I like to think of her as indulging herself a bit. After all, she already loves the children. With a father who looks like that, and is singing directly to her at times, who wouldn't?

well, yeah... max jumps in and she doesn't exactly have opportunity, but i'm not sure she would have said anything anyway. and yes, she rushes out b/c elsa starts talking party, a harsh reminder that she is there to get engaged. i was just trying to make it a different kind of dreamy.
but, right? beautiful children, handsome father with a huge... house. it's like striking gold.

I totally agree with lemacd about the Maria's head lean into the wall and what she may be thinking not realising she is being observed by E and M. But just G finishes the song (the last "bless my homeland forever"), he looks up at M and seems to be almost rattled as they make eye contact and I've always supposed that the little shrug was to break the tension (almost like his first real "kick me in the teeth she is hot" moment). She then looks pretty rattled by the whole thing too and then of course Max comes in with his comment about Georg joining the von Trapp family singers.

I loved reading all of this on my phone today even though I couldn't participate. Props to everyone. I thought what lemacd said: "but i like to think she is indulging herself a little bit. she is thinking, i'm standing over here out of the way, it would hurt no one if i admire how handsome he is, if i let his voice carry me somewhere only we know, if i let myself want everything before me for myself. it would hurt no one if i actually believe he is thinking about me the way i'm thinking about him. ... was it really bedtime? or was she eager to be alone to continue these thoughts? hmmm... " was just beautiful, and I also agree with the smart observation that Maria got out of there fast when Elsa bared her claws, like @utility_singer reminds us. I know everyone has seen this but I just watched it again and I'd forgotten some of the details. That first "happy to see me" little bow to Maria and Maria's melty look back. The first "bless my homeland" is a smile at Elsa - I like to think he realizes he's neglecting her - and she glows in return. After his duet with Liesl, there's a period where he sings alone, and I could almost believe he's remembering singing this song with/to Agathe - he looks like he's reminiscing, although he doesn't look sad. And then at the end, there his his smile/shrug at the end, and Maria's response. Rattled is a great way to say it @charleybec. You guys are amazing.

The version of the song from this scene is my wake up tone on my phone. :-)
I LOVE the little shrug he gives at the end. The end of the scene also positions Elsa beautifully. I love when she strides across the room - in that skirt that always looks to me like it was made out of curtains, too - and grandly proclaims to all that Georg must throw her a party. It is such a classic way to position herself in the hierarchy. "Well, my dear, he may sing you a little song but he will throw ME a party!" Poor fool, she is. :-)

It's almost as if Elsa has seen the writing on the wall already---or, well, leaning against it. ;-)

Elsa saw the writing on the wall at the end of the puppet show (@augiesannie's avatar moment). Actually, we all saw the writing on the wall then....

The other moment about this scene is when little. Gretl is running out of the room and says, "This will be my first party, Father!" My heart always breaks a little for her. I know we are supposed to take away that this will be her first "fancy" party but it always makes me feel like its her first party ever. Like she was so tiny when their mother died and that he was so closed off that even birthday parties ceased. I'm probably emoting waaaay to much but it happens every time.

Never put 2 and 2 together about that one - first party... Even including birthday parties.

We've talked all about during and after the song. Today when watching, I took note of Elsa's expressions from the time Maria walks over with the guitar and says, "It's unanimous. You, Captain" until he takes the guitar. Simmering fury.

But perhaps the Edelweiss scene at the fair is my favourite of the two.

There is a Baroness Fan Club. We don't want her to end up with captain Von Sexypants but we want her to find love.
EP was so good. I adore her. Sigh.

Oh yay! I have to check it out when you are done EP was so good! She is so heartbreaking in the role and we're supposed to dislike her! Slight OT, but after watching TSOM Live (please don't judge ) I realized how good all the actors are. I have always kind of thought Captain was a bit of a thankless role and that it's more of a showpiece for the lovely Jules, but when the role falls into the hand of another actor... yikes! Good try though.

Good try though. I think pretty much everyone ever admits that the movie characterization is far superior to the stage version's. And CP was a huge part of that; his disdain for the film helped but he also worked hard to add depth to the Captain. Sometimes I think about the other actors they considered for the role and I am soooo grateful we got him.

As I always say, Robert Wise was a wise man in pursuing Chris. Without him, I don't think the film would have nearly the staying power it has, and I mean that as no disrespect to Julie at all. It could easily have sunk into Star! territory, as a lovely vehicle for her that simply wasn't a terribly good film. Kudos as well to William Wyler, stepping aside as director.

back to Elsa's reaction for a second - utility_singer's story in particular really reminds me that of all the problems Elsa might have anticipated on the trip (the children, boredom) I bet she didn't anticipate the adorable governess!
